Mommy says no Rock shows...

The venue was at K.J.Somaiya College where most of the people are of the Garba/Bhangda variety so putting on a Rock show was a pretty daring risk. But I have to say whichever of the council members came up with the idea did a dapper job.

The show was opened by Talash which is a really new band and so it was difficult to believe that they actually had a self-titled original, which was quite good. But they were basically opening for Vayu and they put in a couple of crowd pleasers, "Aadat" by Jal and that Sindhi Jhulelaalan song which pissed me off. Rock bands should stick to there guns, screw the crowd.

Which is exactly what Vayu did, fantastic band, great vocals by Toublu (hope I spelled that right) and then there was Ravi Aiyar. Man that guy can play the axe!

They played mostly classic rock (or as I like to call it "Grass" Rock), Hendrix, Zappa, Doors, Floyd and an improvised version of "Come Together" by The Beatles. But the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly a cover of "Highway Star" with all the strings and a little improv. The only thing that got to me (other than the Gujju/Ghati crowd behind me) was that such a well knit outfit doesn't have a single original. And then there was the standard Somaiya show-ending fiasco, someone pulled the plug at nine o' clock just as they were getting ready to play Pearl Jam.

Anyway it was as good a rock show as Somaiya could ever have organised (no moshpit, no headbangers!!!). Kudos to the OC...
